Your friend replies to the group chat within a minute. It's a first. You raise your coffee mug at the screen.
The person in front of you at the till has their card ready before the total comes up. You would toast them if you had a glass.
A colleague says "I'll keep this short" and then does. The meeting ends early. You lift a biscuit in their honour.
Your flatmate refills the ice tray. Nobody asked. Nobody saw. Except you, and you are raising a glass of tap water.
Why it caught on: in The Great Gatsby (2013) the mysterious host finally appears at his own party: Leonardo DiCaprio turns, lifts a coupe of champagne and beams as "Rhapsody in Blue" peaks and the fireworks go off. That grin became the internet's toast to anyone doing something right - and, just as often, to anyone doing it gloriously wrong.
