The item won't scan. The customer says "must be free then!" and laughs. It's the eleventh time today. You laugh too, in a way that costs you a small piece of your soul. You are wearing a bright red polo shirt with the shop's name on it and a badge that says "Happy to help". Someone asks if you work here. No, you just love the shirt. You spend forty minutes folding the jumpers into a perfect wall, sorted by colour. A man walks up, unfolds every one, holds the blue one to the light, and leaves without it. Two minutes to closing. The lights are going off and the shutter is half down. A woman ducks under it and asks if you're still open. She'd like to try on six pairs of boots. **Why it caught on:** a European robin on a twig, cheerful and territorial, became the advice animal for people who work in shops. A huge number of people have worked retail, and every one of them has met that customer.
